Young Red Dragons still in contention for Euro's Final Four
The Young Red Dragons are making significant strides in their current tournament, and the team spirit is stronger than ever. We spoke with Mieke Moyaert, the head coach of the Young Red Dragons, about the team's recent performances and the challenges that lie ahead in this European Championship. Moyaert shares her satisfaction and looks ahead to the upcoming matches.
Four Wins out of Five Matches
With four consecutive wins, Moyaert is very pleased with her team's performances. "So far, we've only lost to Slovenia; we've won all the other matches. The victory against the Czech Republic was a real mental boost for the group," says Moyaert. "That win wasn't expected beforehand. Not that we didn't believe in ourselves, but we knew it was going to be a very strong opponent. I'm proud of how the players adhered to the tactical agreements, combined with strong service pressure."
This unexpected win against the Czech Republic has had a positive impact on the team. "The boys played at a very high level. I can certainly say that we are growing in the tournament. And those are great observations," Moyaert adds.
Looking Ahead: Italy and Spain
The next challenge for the Young Red Dragons is Italy, a team that Moyaert notes is having a very strong tournament. "This will really not be easy, especially when you see the qualities that team possesses," she warns. Additionally, there's Spain, a team that already caused us trouble during the WEVZA tournament. "We mustn't underestimate Spain either. So, I hope we can pull off an upset against one of these two teams, and then anything is possible. But we are not without a chance against these teams, though everything will have to be top-notch."
Moyaert is not only satisfied with the on-field performances but also with the team dynamics. "Overall, I'm really happy with what this group is doing on and off the field. Every player fulfills their role brilliantly. Even the boys who are less on the field play an important role, and I definitely wanted to mention that."
