No final for the Yellow Tigers
The Yellow Tigers started very strongly in the semi-final. They played collectively well, with Hebots and Van Avermaet scoring smoothly. This resulted in a convincing set win with 25-16, after a score progression from 7-2 to 20-11.
In the second set, Sweden found a second wind and made it significantly more difficult for the Belgians. Although the Tigers kept pace until 10-10, they then had to concede. Sweden took the initiative and played out the set with 22-25, after intermediate scores of 15-18 and 17-20.
In the third set, the Swedish ladies were clearly on a roll and rose above their level. The combination of strong play and the performances of world opposite Haak made it very difficult for the Tigers. Sweden quickly ran out to 5-11, prompting coach Vansnick to intervene with some substitutions. The Belgian ladies managed to catch up at 18-18, but eventually had to let the set go to Sweden with 22-25.
In the fourth set, Sweden again had the best start and ran out to 10-13. However, Belgium responded decisively and managed to score five points in a row. The three-point gap remained until the end of the set, which Belgium won with 25-22.
In the decisive tiebreak, Sweden once again had the best start and ran out to 2-5. The Tigers did not let this happen easily and restored the score to 5-5. Sweden showed resolve and ran out again to 6-11. Despite the Tigers' efforts, Sweden's five-point lead was too great. Sweden won the tiebreak with 12-15, thus sending Belgium to the bronze medal match against Romania.
Reaction: Kris Vansnick: "After a perfect start, we let Sweden come into the game. We didn't have enough points ourselves to make the difference. The substitutes helped turn the tide, we kept fighting but unfortunately had too little quality and a weak start in set 5. This match will certainly creep into our clothes now it's a matter of clearing our heads and competing for bronze tomorrow."
