Liam McCluskey: “I’m going all-in for a win against Roeselare in the BeNe Cup”
On Friday 28 December, the second edition of the BeNe Cup will take place at De Maaspoort arena in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. The “Low Countries clash” between Belgian champions Knack Roeselare and Dutch champions Orion Stars Doetinchem is a direct rematch of the 2024 edition, which was won 3-1 by the Belgians (25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18).
The ideal person to preview the event is 23-year-old Liam McCluskey from Zonhoven. The Belgian setter has been a regular starter at Orion Stars for several seasons and is a key figure within the top Dutch club from the Achterhoek region.
Under head coach Dirk Sparidans (former Lindemans Aalst), McCluskey has already won two league titles, two Cups and two Super Cups. A historic treble could be within reach, but first comes the challenge in Den Bosch. McCluskey is also eager to shine in the upcoming BeNe Conference, the alternative competition featuring four top Belgian and Dutch teams. His family regularly travels nearly 200 kilometres to support him.
Currently the only Belgian playing in the Dutch Eredivisie, McCluskey recently extended his contract with Orion Stars until 2028.
“In many ways, I feel completely at home here,” he says. “The club and the city of Doetinchem have embraced me, even with support from football club De Graafschap. I do have a special contract clause, though: no transfer to Belgian clubs, but opportunities abroad remain open. After serious injury problems in 2023-2024, I’m finally back at my best. That ace on the final point of the Cup final was unforgettable. This season, we’re perfect so far: 9 wins out of 9.”
Reflecting on his past with Maaseik and the Belgian national team, McCluskey remains positive:
“The bridges aren’t burned. My non-selection gives me extra motivation. I hope to put myself back on the radar of national coach Zanini by performing well in the BeNe Cup and BeNe Conference. Beating Roeselare would certainly help,” he says with a grin.
According to McCluskey, Orion Stars are stronger than last season despite several squad changes. Newcomers such as Wouter ter Maat, Gijs Jorna and Hiago Crins add quality and experience, supported by a staff with strong Belgian ties.
Asked about Roeselare, he shows great respect:
“Libero Dennis Deroey is still world class. And players like Stijn D’Hulst, Mathijs Desmet and Pieter Coolman are extremely dangerous.”
The BeNe Cup innovations will remain in place:
“The BeNe bonus point and increased fan interaction really enhance the spectacle.”
Finally, on his personal situation:
“I couldn’t be at a better club. Everything is organised perfectly. The only downside is the distance from my partner, who works in Belgium. But we both accept that some sacrifices are temporary.”
