Roeselare loses against Ankara

In the opening set, Stijn D'Hulst initially surprised the Turkish block with some first-tempo attacks. Pieter Coolman thanked with a 5-on-5 and hit a storage ace on top. In the second set, Matthew Anderson claimed a starring role. The American world number one confirmed that with a scorching serve at set point. A true demonstration by Knack Roeselare followed in the third set. This was dominance in its purest form, a magnificent team performance. The response of the fanatical home team - 11-6 and 20-13 in the fourth set - was also handsome. Of course, the Turkish volleyballers are no pancakes either.

The tiebreak was a thriller. To claim that the final set was decided by frequent challenges is probably an exaggeration. But it was clear that millimetre-thin details were involved. The last doubtful point - a block by Anderson on the other standout Rotty - was the best proof of this. The West Flemish remain stuck on 1 win. Everything will depend on the remaining matches to decide on which place Knack Roeselare will finish in their pool. (WVM)
