Matthijs Desmet Announces Retirement from Professional Volleyball

24/02/2026

Matthijs Desmet will bring his professional volleyball career to an end at the conclusion of the current season. With 49 caps for the Belgian senior national team, he established himself as a regular member of the Red Dragons and made a meaningful contribution to the recent sporting development of Belgian volleyball.

During the 2017–2018 season, he stepped up to the highest level by signing his first professional contract with Knack Roeselare. In 2022, he fulfilled his international ambitions with a transfer to Pallavolo Padova in the Italian SuperLega. He subsequently continued his career in Poland, competing in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues. This season, Desmet returned to Knack Roeselare. At the same time, he consolidated his position within the Red Dragons, earning a total of 49 international caps.

During the preparation for the 2023 European Championship, Desmet suffered a serious ankle injury. Despite medical treatment and two surgical procedures, he continued to experience physical limitations that prevented him from returning to his usual performance level. After careful consideration and consultation with his close circle, he decided to conclude his professional career.

In a statement, Desmet said:
“It is not an easy decision to make at the age of 26. Due to ongoing physical limitations, I am no longer able to reach the level I expect of myself. Out of respect for myself, my club and the supporters, I believe this is the right choice.”

TopVolley Belgium and the Red Dragons would like to sincerely thank Matthijs Desmet for his professionalism, commitment and contribution to Belgian volleyball, both at club level and in the national team jersey.

We wish him every success in the next chapter of his professional and personal life.
