Ferre Reggers: "Ukraine will be our key match"
The Red Dragons are ready for their biggest challenge of the season. The Volleyball World Championship in the Philippines is just around the corner, and all of Belgium is watching. The first big test comes immediately: Ukraine. It is not only the opening match, but its outcome may well define the rest of the tournament.
Ferre Reggers, Belgium’s volleyball star, knows the pressure is high but believes his team can rise to the occasion. “If we win, it will give us confidence for the rest, but if we lose, it will be very hard,” says the 22‑year‑old opposite, who impressed for the second season in a row with Milano. He could be the player to make the difference, but insists: “It’s not about one player. It’s about the collective. We need to give everything as a team.”
Under head coach Emanuele Zanini, the Red Dragons have prepared harder than ever: intense training sessions, sharp friendlies, and total focus. The squad combines experience with youth. Veterans like Sam Deroo and Stijn D’Hulst anchor the team, while young guns like Reggers, Basil Dermaux, and Seppe Rotty inject energy and firepower.
Ferre, after two impressive seasons in Italy, what does this World Championship mean to you personally?
“The World Championship is the ultimate test. It’s every player’s dream stage. For me, it’s a chance to prove that I can perform at the very top level, not just in the SuperLega, but also for my country. It’s a dream come true, but I know it won’t be an easy path.”
How tough was the preparation?
“It was really demanding. Coach Zanini didn’t compromise. We trained up to three hours, very intense, always focusing on details. The hardest part wasn’t physical, but mental – learning to handle the pressure. We’ve tried to turn that pressure into motivation.”
What will be the key against Ukraine?
“Ukraine is physically very strong, with huge serves and blocks. They have many players competing at Europe’s highest level. To beat them, our strength must be speed and precision. We need to play fast, keep variety, and raise the tempo. That’s how we can surprise them.”
How do you experience the mix of youth and veterans within the team?
“It’s great to see young players grow, like Seppe Rotty, Basil Dermaux or Kobe Verwimp. They bring energy and fresh ideas. At the same time, experienced players like Sam, Stijn and Pieter lead by example. It’s truly the best squad we’ve had in recent years.”
What about your group opponents: Italy, Ukraine, and Algeria?
“Italy are giants, very strong physically and tactically. Ukraine is a tough physical battle too. Algeria should be manageable, but we must not underestimate them. We need to respect every opponent.”
At just 22, you already have top‑level experience in Italy. Does that help in stressful moments?
“Yes. The SuperLega shaped me the most – the intensity, the speed, the need to adapt fast. Playing in the VNL next season will also be invaluable. These international competitions make you mentally tougher, which is exactly what we need.”
If Belgium reach the next round, you could face France or Argentina...
“These are two top national teams. France are Olympic champions, which says it all. Argentina are very strong too, but I’d say their style suits us a bit better. If we play smart and keep our speed and block, we can beat them. In the end, it doesn’t matter which of them we face – we’ll treat both with respect, but also with determination.”
