Esther De Rycke: A Rising Star in Belgian Refereeing

31/10/2025

One name has been gaining momentum in the Belgian volleyball world: Esther De Rycke. Crowned Beachreferee of the Year in 2024, she’s quickly making her mark both nationally and internationally. A postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University, Esther balances her scientific career with her passion for volleyball — two worlds that share precision and focus.

Growing up in a volleyball family, Esther started playing young but picked up the whistle at 17. After a knee injury, she fully committed to officiating, finding her place in beach volleyball, where the atmosphere and player interaction fuel her motivation.

“I love being part of the game without being the centre of attention. A good referee stays calm, communicates clearly, and keeps control when emotions run high.”

Since 2023, she’s been refereeing on the European stage, including the U18 and U21 European Championships. Her next goal? To reach the FIVB level and represent Belgium on the world circuit.

“Every tournament teaches me something new. The level is intense, but the experience is priceless. My aim is to keep improving and see how far I can go.”

Inspired by experienced referees like Maarten Ghysel and Olympic official Agnieszka Myszkowka, Esther continues to break ground for women in refereeing — proving that passion and perseverance can take you anywhere.
