Strong Yellow Tigers beat Slovenia
Two on two for the Belgians at the European Championships. Lots of fans dressed up in yellow and loudly encouraged the Yellow Tigers. And it paid off, as they won 3-1.
Immediately a fantastic start of the match. Early in the first set, the Belgians build a five-point gap. The Yellow Tigers hardly make a single mistake. Slovenia struggles to score and cannot connect. To loud applause, the Belgians take a big lead, 14-7. The Slovenian team occasionally pokes against but can never really cause the Yellow Tigers any problems. Set 1 goes smoothly to Belgium: 25-18.
The Yellow Tigers continue to act on level terms during the second set. Slovenia clings on but fails to take over. Halfway through the set it is 12-8 for the Belgians. The Slovenians come out slightly better and make it difficult for the Tigers to deepen the gap further. An efficient Belgium also wins the second set, 25-20.
In the third set we get to see a completely different scenario. Slovenia clearly taps from a different keg and leads the dance, 13-15. The Belgians try to get closer step by step but it doesn't seem to work out. A slightly higher error rate than in the first two sets allows the Slovenians to take advantage. Via Rampelberg and Herbots, the Belgians sneak closer again. Captain Van Gestel also makes her contribution. However, Slovenia takes the third set, 21-25.
The fourth set also seems to be a dime on its side. After a fantastic rally the fans jump straight into the stands, it is 8-8. On character, the Belgians work their way to 10-8. The Tigers again found their level of play and increased the lead, 14-10. The crowd now fully rallies behind the Belgians. At 20-17, both teams prepare for an exciting final phase. Slovenia equalised, 23-23. Van Avermaet puts the Tigers on match point! But that is cleared by Slovenia. So it keeps going up and down, until 30-30. An ace by Van Gestel and 34-32!
