Final Four for the Yellow Tigers!

01/06/2024

The Yellow Tigers were already assured of a place in the Final Four of the European Golden League before the match against the Czech Republic began.

The match started evenly with Belgium's usual starting seven: Krenicky, Martin, Herbots, Stragier, Van Avermaet, Fransen, and Rampelberg. Thanks to a strong-scoring Herbots, the Tigers took an 11-7 lead. However, the Czech ladies fought back in the set with a strong serving run from Ema Kneiflova (who was active at Charleroi last season) and took the lead for the first time at 19-20. Pauline Martin saved the first set point at 22-24, but the Czech ladies ultimately won the set 23-25.

In the second set, Helena Gilson was preferred over Pauline Martin. The Tigers started strong and maintained a two-point lead throughout the set. Czech player Mljenkova served from 18-16 to 18-19, but after a timeout by coach Vansnick, the Tigers restored order. Substitute Cos served until 23-21, after which captain Herbots decided the set with two consecutive scoring attacks, ending it at 26-24.

In the third set, Belgium played noticeably more freely and built a lead of 13-9. Van Avermaet extended this lead further with her service, increasing the score from 13-10 to 16-10. Fransen showed her class with a nice kill block at 18-13. Herbots impressed with her service and brought the score to 23-14 with an ace. Although the Czech Republic made a brief comeback, Van Avermaet finished it off nicely with a fly attack, giving Belgium the third set 25-18.
In the fourth set, both teams remained evenly matched until substitute Nel Demeyer served two consecutive aces (from 18-17 to 20-17). This established the decisive lead, and the Tigers also won the fourth set 25-20.

Coach Vansnick said after the match that the Tigers had shown their true DNA. After an unfortunate loss in the first set, the team showed a lot of resilience in the second set. Herbots and Van Avermaet did more than their job well and brought the Tigers to their best level. Tomorrow's duel with Ukraine will be another nail-biter as they must win to secure a spot in the Final Four.
